Recovering After Pregnancy

One of the most critical stages in a woman’s life is during pregnancy. It is paramount that one should keep one’s health in tiptop condition in order to ascertain that both mother and child will be healthy. As such, expectant mothers put a lot of premium on their health, knowing that they are embarking on a journey at the end of which a new life will emerge. However, what most women should know is that it is not only during pregnancy where utmost care should be taken. It is also important to pay attention to one’s health after pregnancy. This is because there is still the possibility that complications may set in even after the baby has been delivered.

Why It Is Important to be Mindful on the Changes after Pregnancy

Most women just ignore their state of health as long as their baby is already safe. However, this behavior is indeed very risky as most women who have experienced a lot of difficulties after birth can tell. This is why recovery after pregnancy should also be given the detailed attention that was given during pregnancy.

The main consideration in recovering after a pregnancy is to prepare a woman for possible physical effects. These changes are to be expected. After all, pregnancy is a life-changing journey with plenty of baggage. In order to make recovery after pregnancy easier, it is important that one should be familiar with the common difficulties experienced after childbirth.

Coping with Changes after Pregnancy

The following are the most common changes that a woman may encounter after pregnancy:

1) Psychological changes. This refers to the changes in a woman’s mental perception of herself as well as of the people around her. For most women, this period involves great adjustments and difficulties such as coping with a new role of being a mother and learning the proper ways to care for the baby. For other women, they get easily depressed at the physical changes such as gaining weight, which may alter her sense of beauty.

2) Physical changes. This is the most number of changes encountered after pregnancy and one that involves a lot of adjustments. The following are some of the most common physical changes after delivery:

3) Constipation. A woman may find it difficult to discharge for a few days after delivery. Moreover, there may be some hemorrhoids accompanied by sore muscles that make bowel discharge very difficult.

4) Sore perineum. This usually happens if you have hemorrhoids or an episiotomy, which is a surgical incision of the area between the anus and the vagina. As a result, a woman will find it difficult to walk for several days. Knowing this in advance should help a woman cope with it properly without going through a stressful period.

5) Hot and cold flashes. This is expected because of your body’s hormonal changes.

6) Sore breasts. This is mainly due to the new formation of milk in the breasts. The nipples may also become sore.

7) Weight loss. Immediately after pregnancy, a woman will feel a few pounds lighter than her usual weight. However, as her body adjusts to the new condition, it may rapidly gain weight, unless it’s carefully monitored.

Pregnancy and Weight Gain

For every woman, getting pregnant is perhaps the most joyous episode in her life. This is because it is the fulfillment of their role to give new life to this world. As such, a lot of women eagerly awaits the moment when they will finally conceive. However, despite being replete with joy, pregnancy carries with it a lot of risks and difficulties. This is due to the fact that because pregnancy entails systemic changes in a woman’s body, there is always the possibility that something will go wrong somewhere. That is why a woman has to be so careful and vigilant of her health during pregnancy.

One of the factors that a woman should look out for during pregnancy is weight gain. Although some gain in weight is to be expected during pregnancy, extreme gain in weight is a clue that something is wrong about the woman’s health. It could mean some problems, such as preeclampsia wherein a pregnant woman gains weight at a very high rate.

Importance of Weight Gain

Weight gain is very important to a pregnant woman. This is because a pregnant woman now needs to take in nutrients for her and her baby. Even without the pregnancy, a woman typically gains weight as she gets older. With the growth of the baby in the woman’s tummy, gaining weight is typically expected.

The Right Weight Gain for a Pregnant Woman

Any pregnant woman must remember that whatever state of pregnancy she is in, she must gain weight. If a woman does not gain weight, then it is an indication of an even greater problem. Concerning weight gain during pregnancy, an obese woman should gain at least 11 pounds in weight while an underweight woman should gain up to 25 pounds during pregnancy. These figures should be almost doubled for those who are carrying twins.

The Right Way to Gain Weight during Pregnancy

Just because there is now the baby and pregnant woman to feed, it does not necessarily mean that she has to double her food intake. This is not always the correct way of gaining weight, although there may be some wisdom behind the decision to double the food intake. What is very critical is the kind of food taken and to make sure that both mother and child are given the proper nutrients needed to keep both healthy.

When Should She Expect to Gain Weight during Pregnancy

During the first trimester, a woman begins to gain weight, although most of the increase in weight is due to water and the materials needed by the baby. During the next two trimesters, weight gain is spread fairly even. However, unlike with the first trimester, weight gain during this period is due mainly to the development of the baby. That is why it is very critical during this period that a woman puts a lot of emphasis on making sure that she and her baby gets the proper nutrients from the right kind and amount of food.

All about the Pregnancy Ultrasound

Because pregnancy is a very delicate stage in both the woman and her baby’s life, a lot of effort is in place to make sure that a woman will have a safe pregnancy and delivery. The goal of this is to make sure that both mother and child will pass through the process safe and sound. In any case, attention is specially given to minimize the risks during pregnancy, which is plenty especially if one is careless about it. One such way to make sure that pregnancy will be a fulfilling and safe experience is to undergo a regular ultrasound checkup upon the advice of the doctor.

What a Pregnancy Ultrasound Is

An ultrasound is one of the benefits that technology has given to safe pregnancy. It is essentially a cyclic sound pressure whose frequency is greater than the upper limit of human hearing. It is used in a variety of applications to penetrate a medium without the necessity of probing into it through an instrument in order to learn more about the state of the medium being studied. However, it is in pregnancy that ultrasound sees its most useful application to find out more on the state of the fetus inside the womb.

Why a Pregnancy Ultrasound Checkup Is a Must

A woman who is pregnant is advised to undergo regular ultrasound checkups in order to ascertain that the baby is in sound condition. The frequency of the ultrasound checkup depends on the doctor’s demand. The higher the risks in pregnancy, the more should a woman undergo ultrasound checkup. With an ultrasound checkup, the mother and doctor will be able to see an image of what the mother’s baby looks like. It will also help them determine the size of the baby and indicate if the baby is growing right, the position of the baby in the womb, and even determine the gender of the baby. Apart from these, the following are also the reasons why ultrasound checkup is a must during pregnancy:

1) To detect the level of liquid in the womb. An ultrasound can help the doctor determine if there is a need to intervene, especially when there is the possibility of the fetus developing abnormalities due to abnormal fluid levels.

2) To detect multiple pregnancies. When a woman becomes pregnant, the underlying belief for most is that there is only one child. However, there are cases of multiple pregnancies, and an ultrasound will help a mother determine if she is carrying two or even more babies.

3) To detect abnormalities in the placenta through placental localization

4) To diagnose fetal malformation. This is one of the more important usages of ultrasound. This is because the procedure can help the mother learn if the baby that she is carrying has potential abnormalities such as hydrocephalus, anencephaly, and hydrops fetalis. When an abnormality is detected, doctors may still be able to do something to remedy the situation, depending on the malformation and its severity.

Healthy Foods During Pregnancy

When a woman becomes pregnant, it is always imperative that she will take care of her health in a more careful manner than ever. Because pregnancy involves the phase wherein a baby is prepared for its entry into the world in her mother’s womb, it is important for the baby to obtain the proper amount and kind of nutrients that will ensure a healthy and safe delivery.

Eating Right during Pregnancy

There are various factors that a woman can do to ensure that her health and that of the baby is in good state. For some women, a little exercise will help while others have their own routine that are also beneficial for the baby and for the mother, along with providing a hope for a safe delivery. However, one thing that a pregnant woman should not ignore is to make the healthy choices of foods during pregnancy.

During pregnancy, the baby is totally dependent on its mother for nutrients. This is why a pregnant woman must bear in mind that what she eats is not only for her own health but for the baby as well. Here, a lot of misinterpretations exist. Some pregnant women insist that just because there are now two of them to feed, it means she has to double her regular food intake. This is entirely wrong. She does not necessarily have to double her food intake. She just need to make sure that the proper dose of the needed nutrients is more than enough. She also needs to make the healthy food choices.

Healthy Foods to Eat during Pregnancy

What are the healthy food choices for pregnant women? There may not be a single list of foods that will be good for all pregnant women. This is because each pregnant woman has her own unique needs. Nonetheless, it is possible to list down foods that will be right for all pregnant women regardless of their state:

Lean meat, fish, eggs, and peanut butter. These are rich in protein and they help regulate the protein concentration in a pregnant woman’s body. Inability to regulate protein content in the body, especially in the urine, may cause preeclampsia, which can have fatal consequences. Protein is also vital for cell growth and blood production. These foods are likewise good sources for iron, which is critical in blood cell production.

Bread, cereals, rice, potatoes, fruits, and vegetables. These are rich sources of carbohydrates, which are needed for the body’s energy. Moreover, carbohydrates also help in keeping the body warm.

Milk, cheese, yogurt, and sardines. These are rich in calcium, which is very vital in making sure that bones are strong as well as in maintaining nerve function.

Carrots, sweet potatoes, and leafy green vegetables. These are important for having a healthy skin, for bone growth, and for good eyesight.

Citrus fruit, tomatoes, and fortified fruit juices. These are great sources of vitamin C, which is needed to aid in iron absorption and for healthy gums, bones, and teeth.

Pregnancy: Is Eating for Two Healthy?

Eating for two is not necessary, although this is a common belief among pregnant women. The most common advice that expectant mothers hear is that one should double her food intake because there are now two to share the nutrients from the food taken in. This is an erroneous thinking that needs to be corrected because if such belief persists, then it will be that pregnant women may be putting themselves at risk.

When a woman is pregnant, there may be some weight gain. However, the weight gain should not be from an increased intake of food. Rather, it should come from the growth of the baby. Because the baby is growing, a pregnant woman has to make sure that she and her baby are getting the right amount and kind of nutrients to ensure the health of both of them.

What Is the Proper Diet during Pregnancy?

Eating fresh fruits with doses of green leafy vegetables are great for pregnant women. Moreover, one needs to avoid liquor and stop smoking lest the baby will develop some deformities or health problems. Aside from these, one also needs to remember the following to obtain the right amount of nutrition during pregnancy:

1) Make sure to eat a lot of grains. Grains will give your body protein. As such, grains should comprise the majority of your diet. One will also need to consume fresh fruits and vegetables. Finally, one should only sparingly eat fatty foods and other processed foods.

2) Because a pregnant mother has special needs when it comes to nutrition, one should also instill variety into her diet. This is to make sure that she is getting the right supply of nutrients from various food sources. Moreover, it will also take away the boredom that some mothers feel when they are taking in the same set of food regularly.

3) Make sure that your body has sufficient supply of water. Allowing your body to settle low on water or to get dehydrated is one of the biggest mistakes a pregnant woman can make. While a pregnant woman may feel the occasional thirst for juices, she should remember to take in only fresh fruit juices.

4) Make sure that the food is fresh. This is important in order to obtain the highest level of nutrients for the mother and baby.

Instead of munching in one huge meal that is enough for two people, eat smaller meals at shorter intervals. This is to allow your stomach time to digest what you take in as well as to prevent filling up your stomach, which may cause bloating and later on causes vomiting.

As medical experts suggests, it is not always right to say that one needs to double her food intake to fill up the needs of both the mother and her baby. Doing so may mean more harm than doing good, which may complicate the pregnancy. What is needed is to make sure that mother and child gets the right amount of nutrition from fresh foods.

Are You Wearing The Right Sized Bra?

How many times is it written in the press, and mentioned on the news that more than 80% of women are wearing the wrong sized bra? Frequently? Well, are you? Do you know whether your bra fits correctly?

Is it important? Do we really need to be that bothered? Well, the answer really has to be yes. Younger women can get away without wearing a bra, or wearing one that doesn’t support them properly, as their young muscles and tendons keep things in place. But this doesn’t go on forever, and as we age, we are all too keenly aware of the dreaded droop! And anyway, an ill fitting bra under a T-shirt or close fitting top is just so ugly.

There are other, potentially more serious problems though, especially if you have a curvy figure. Breasts that aren’t properly supported can lead to all sorts of problems with your back, shoulders, skin irritations and self-esteem. If you have never been properly fitted, why not try it? You may well find the bras you buy in the future will completely change how you carry yourself, bringing your shoulders back and boosting your self-esteem considerably.

Although too many women are wearing bras that do not fit them correctly, there really is an over reliance on consistently buying the same size. We go into a store, are measured and told we are a 38G and off we go and buy only 38G bras.

It can often be just as well to throw away the tape measure and keep trying on bras until you get one that fits properly. If you rely too heavily on the tape measure, you stick in the comfort zone and continue to buy the same size. But there are far too many variables now in bra manufacture to be able to rely on that ‘size’ as a constant. Here are just a few:

1. The type of materials used
2. How the fabric is cut
3. The level of support/elasticity offered by the fabric
4. The design of the bra
5. The style of the bra (full cup, balconette, demi-bra, strapless, bustier etc )
6. Variations in sizing between brands
7. Variations in sizing conventions in different countries
8. Variables in the production process
9. Fashion sizing (i.e.: putting smaller sizes on the label than the garment actually is …)

…and all this before you even start to consider how your own body alters over the course of the day, the month, the year, or events such as pregnancy, measurable weight loss or gain, or surgery.

Therefore, the best way of ensuring you get a correct fitting bra is to try it on yourself. There are many guides to buying the correct size – some rely entirely on the tape measure, but many more are now moving towards the advice of trying on until the fit is right.

If the bra is right for you, it will:

1. Feel comfortable – there will be no red marks or wheals
2. The back band will be parallel with the front band
3. If it is underwired, the underwires will sit comfortably at the back of the breast without digging in. The front of the underwires will sit comfortably between your breasts and rest against your breast bone.
4. The cups will be full – not overflowing, and not sagging
5. The straps will not cut in, and they won’t slip down.

When you do find a bra that fits properly, why not buy another one! There’s nothing wrong with having a range of different ‘sizes’. Bras from the same brands tend to be the same size, there will be different cup sizes in European and American makes and you may need different cup and back sizes to cope with changes in your body shape each month.

So, when you have bought the right bra for you, follow the care instructions to keep it doing its job as long as possible. Bras usually only have an effective life of around 5/6 months and will lose some elasticity each time they are washed. You will probably need to alter the straps and the hook position over that time to compensate for this.

Yes, there are too many women wearing the wrong sized bra.
Yes, it matters.
Yes, it is important to ensure the right fit.
No, you don’t have to rely on the tape measure.
No, you don’t have to buy the same size every time because you have been told to.

There is so much to choose from, enjoy trying on! Good luck in your search.

Sweat Issues With Your Bra

The weather is finally supposed to be warming up and not a moment too soon. Still, warmer temperatures can lead to a problem with excessive sweating around and insider of your bra. Is there anything that can be done?

Bras are designed to provide support for your girls. There are all kinds of little innovations that are intended to provide that support while giving you the comfort you need to get through the day. All that being said, there is no doubt that wearing bras in warmer temperatures can lead to serious sweat issues. While sweat is just a part of life, there are some steps that can be taken to deal with it.

The body is an amazing heat dispersal mechanism. The skin is the primary organ used to shed heat from our inner cores. This is done by bringing blood to just under the skin surface, opening the pours and letting heat escape. If your bra restricts the exposure of the skin to the air, this system is going to be interrupted. The cups are obviously going to do so, but that can't be avoided. If you are wearing bras that push the breasts together, however, it can. As a result, you might want to change the style of bra you wear.

A second factor to consider is the material the bra is made out of. Some materials will "breathe", which lets air get to the skin. Other materials will actually "wick" the sweat away from the skin as is found with certain sports clothing. Cotton and silk materials breathe well, but you should look into many of the new microfiber materials used with bras. The microfiber materials are tailored to different purposes and some of these are definitely sweat oriented.

At the end of the day, sweat is a natural part of the bodily process. It keeps you from overheating, which is very difficult on the body and can even lead to death in worse case scenarios. A quality bra can minimize the sweat level you experience, but no bra is ever going to completely deal with the problem. With this in mind, don't expect perfection.

When The Bra Don't Fit, Brand Must Be Quit....

Splurge shopping might be a bit off limits these days given the state of the economy, but you still have to buy certain garments. Bras certainly qualify. Oddly, not all bra brands provided sizes for all women.

You realize one day that your comfortable bras are wearing out. You head over to the mall for a few hours to browse through the selections. You find a beautiful balcony bra. You find a great strapless number as well. There's only one problem - you can't find your size. You ask the clerk and find out that the brand doesn't even make bras in your size!

Surprisingly, this is a very common problem. For whatever reason, some brands just provide bras in a relatively small sizing range. Sometimes the limitation is in the band size. Other times, they'll limit the range of cup sizes available. It is maddening, particularly if you don't fit in the "average" range, to wit, if you have a plus size bra size.

Plus size bras tend to be a fairly specific niche for bra brands. To be honest, many well know brands simply don't produce plus size bras for us women with larger breasts. This can be incredibly frustrating when shopping, particularly when you find a bra you love. One way to avoid the problem is to stick to brands that definitely cater to the plus size figure. Such brands include Le Mystere, Goddess, Freya, Panache, Fantasie of England, Chantelle and, of course, Enell for sports bras.

When it comes to bras, pricing comes a close second to fit when ranking the issues you have to consider. Oddly, plus size bras are generally priced the same as bras for "average" breast size women. One would think the niche would carry higher prices, but it simply isn't true these days.

I've always found it very odd that certain brands don't carry a full set of sizes. If you are going to go through the process of launching a brand and marketing it, an expensive affair by any measure, why would you limit your audience? To each their own, I guess. As far as you and I are concerned, try to find the best brands for your breast size and stick with them. Remember, if the bra don't fit, you must quit...the brand!

Most Common Bra Problems Faced by Women

The vast majority of women complain about uncomfortable bras. The reason for much of the complaining boils down to a few common problems. Fortunately, most of these are easily fixed.

Straps vs. Band Support - Every woman knows what a bra looks like, but many don't understand how it actually is intended to work. Much like a hanging plant, most believe the shoulder straps should hold up the cups and breasts. This is incorrect. The band around the bottom of the cups that circles around your back should do at least 80 percent of the heavy lifting. If you have shoulder and neck pain as well as headaches, creating slack in the straps can solve it immediately.

Be the Band - Now that we know the band is supposed to do much of the work, we need to obviously buy bras where the band fits correctly. The correct fit is one where the band runs around your body at the same level. This should be just below the breast. It should not ride up on your back. If it does, the band is usually to loose and your breasts will sag dramatically. The band should be snug and not move up and down. If you get a teeter-totter type motion, there is a problem.

Adjust for Time - As we age, our bodies change. We might not like it, but facts are facts. If you are still wearing the same bra size you wore 20 years ago in college, you either have great DNA or need to update your undergarments. The size of a bra will change five or more times during your life, so make sure you get a sizing check every few years.

Know Thy Cup Size - Consider a cup of coffee. If you fill it too much, the coffee spills. If you fill it to little, you don't get your morning jolt. If you fill it just right, it is going to be a good day. The same analogy can be applied to bra cups. If you don't fill the cup completely, you are abusing your breasts. Go down a size and see how it fits. If you are busting out over the edge of the cups, you are wearing cups that are too small. Try moving up a size and you'll notice any breast pain you are suffering will often disappear quickly.

The bra is a rather simply fashion mechanism, but getting the right fit can be a continual challenge. Don't settle for discomfort and pain. There is no reason to and a properly fitting bra can make a world of difference in your quality of life.

Herbal Hair Loss Remedies

Herbs hold an obvious appeal for many people because they support the body’s natural healing mechanisms to target the cause of the problem, as opposed to merely tackling the symptoms. It would be wrong to present herbal hair loss remedies as a miracle solution for all sufferers — there is however growing evidence to support the view that some herbal remedies offer real hope to many people.

Let’s examine the case for some of the more popular remedies to determine if they’re worth trying.
Ginkgo biloba: This popular herb is thought to improve blood circulation to the brain and skin. Herbalists believe that the increased flow of blood to the brain area delivers more nutrients to the hair follicles thus promoting hair regrowth. The recommended dose is 120-160mg of dry extract each day spread over three doses.

Green tea (Camellia sinesis): It is thought that catechins found in green tea may inhibit the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase that converts testosterone into hair-unfriendly DHT. It is therefore believed to be effective in preventing and treating male pattern type baldness. You should drink several cups of green tea each day or take it in capsule form as instructed by the manufacturer.

He Shou Wu (Polygonum multiflorum): Also known as Fo-Ti, this Chinese herb has traditionally been used to reduce hair loss. It is found in many commercial preparations, or in tea and capsule form.
Pygeum (Pygeum africanum): Derived from the bark of an evergreen, it works in a similar way to green tea. It is widely used to treat prostate problems and male pattern baldness. Users should take 60-500mg per day in pill or capsule form.

Saw palmetto (Seranoa repens): This is the current treatment of choice for many men due to its ability to protect the prostate, slow hair loss and encourage hair regrowth. It forms the core element of many commercially prepared hair loss treatments but can easily be obtained in its pure form. The recommended dose is a 160mg capsule twice each day, but make sure the ingredients are made from the berry extract not the dried berries themselves.

Stinging nettle (Urtica diocia): This has long been favored as a means of preventing hair loss due to its ability to block the conversion of testosterone into DHT. It can be taken in pill or capsule form with an optimum dose of 50-100mg per day. It is particularly effective when combined with pygeum and saw palmetto.

Affects in Women With Hair Lose

It is usually men that are thought of when the problem of hair loss comes up. Women are not the typical person when you think about losing your hair.

It is possible for a woman to lose her hair just as easily as a man. The only difference is the affect that it can have on a woman’s life. A woman is judged on her appearance and the loss of her hair is one thing that can diminish a woman’s confidence. Whether we like it or not, this is the truth.

A woman is much more tuned in to her appearance than a man generally is and will primp before she leaves the house everyday. When a woman loses her hair, she will probably be unsure about the way that she should behave. A loss of self esteem is one of the biggest problems when it comes to hair loss.

This loss of confidence and self esteem is one of the reasons that it is important that a woman learn all that she can do to find a solution to her hair loss. There are many reasons that a woman will lose her hair that are very different from the reasons that a man will. Getting an appointment with the doctor should be the first order of business.

Men will usually lose their hair because of genetics, but a woman could lose her hair for a variety of reasons.

Stress is the biggest factor in a woman’s hair loss. If a woman is losing her hair, the best thing that she can do is eliminate as much stress from her life as possible. Some of the other reasons for a hair loss is hormonal, illness, diet and medications.

Women are under a greater amount of stress than any other group in society. They are trying to balance a career with their family and all of the duties that go along with both. There is a great deal of stress for women who are trying to juggle everything on their own.

A woman who is dealing with this kind of lifestyle will find that she doesn’t always take care of herself the way that she must. Your health and diet are important factors when it comes to your hair loss. If you are not getting a proper amount of rest and eating a good diet, your health will be affected.

If you want your hair to stay in your head and look the best that it can, you should make sure that you are eating a nutritionally balanced diet. Poor diet will often show the effects on the hair. Take a look at someone’s hair that is in poor health and you will see how it effects the hair.

It is a good idea for a woman who is having a hair loss to get in to see the doctor to see if there is a medical reason for the loss of hair. The doctor may be able to find the illness and begin a treatment that could stop the hair loss.

Aging will cause the hair to fall out as well. Visiting with a dermatologist might be able to give you a treatment for your hair loss.

Hormones will cause a problem with your hair loss also. A doctor might be able to find a treatment for this type of hair loss. Talk to your doctor if you are taking any medications that would cause a hair loss. Replacement hormone therapy and the stopping of medications might be all that you need to stop your hair loss.

How Strong Are Your Bones?

"....It wasn't raining when Noah built the ark"

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), ten million Americans (80-90% of them women) are known to suffer from osteoporosis. In addition, an estimated 18 million women with low bone mass have yet to be diagnosed or treated.

Even though osteoporotic fractures are more common in women than heart attack, stroke, and breast cancer combined, many physicians don't consider osteoporosis a leading diagnostic priority. A recent large study in New England noted that less than 10% of all clinicians, regardless of specialty, ranked bone density as the first or second most helpful screening test (in comparison with blood pressure, cholesterol, mammogram, thyroid, PSA and stool testing). Gynecologists (GYNs) were more likely to rank osteoporosis screening as a priority (50% of GYNs vs 13% of internists and 10% of family physicians).

In another recent study, only 20% of older women who sustained fractures were given a bone density evaluation by their health care practitioner.

What is "bone density"?

Bone is dynamic, always being built up, always breaking down. Bones have a central matrix or "cortex" that maintains their strength. New bone is always being made by cells called osteoblasts, and older bone broken down and metabolized by cells called osteoclasts. In with the new and out with the old! The idea is to build up enough new and not lose the old!

How to build new bone and prevent loss

The most important element in bone metabolism and whether or not you'll get osteoporosis is genetics. But, since there's no cosmic way I'm aware of to modify your genes, let's stick with what we can do.

To build new bone you need 3 things: protein (from food); calcium and vitamin D (and maybe magnesium) from food or supplements; and exercise (to mobilize the calcium). Calcium requirements are approximately 1200 mg per day under age 60 and 1500 mg per day over 60 to 65; vitamin D 800 I.U. per day and magnesium maybe 600 mg (although not absolutely necessary). Dietary sources of calcium include milk and yogurt (about 300-400 mg/cup), broccoli, collards, bok choy, kale, sardines, and tofu with calcium sulfate (200-300 mg/serving). "Older" people (over 70 to 75) should pay particular attention to protein, calcium and vitamin D intake.

Bone loss rates are very much up to genetics, but sex, age, and mineral supplementation play a large part. Women, who have an abrupt cessation of estrogen production at menopause, lose bone faster than men, who experience a much slower tapering of their testosterone levels as they age. Both estrogen and testosterone help prevent excessive bone loss.

Other compounds that may be utilized for bone loss prevention include the SERM (Selective Estrogen Receptive Modulator) raloxifen (Evista®). SERMs are compounds that "look like" estrogen to the bone (and occupy estrogen receptors), while acting like an anti-estrogen in the breast.

A class of compounds called "bisphosphonates" (Fosamax®, Actonel®, Didronel®) also help prevent bone loss and have no hormone-like actions.

Testosterone and DHEA may also be helpful in preventing loss.

The best way to treat osteoporosis is to prevent its occurrence! Once it has occurred, however, it is of paramount importance to stop it in its tracks and hopefully reverse the loss. If the situation is severe, a combination of two methods may be helpful. If it's quite severe and/or you've already sustained a fracture, a new daily injectable medication called Forteo® (synthetic parathyroid hormone) is the very best way to reverse loss. Needless to say it is extremely expensive.

Who is at highest risk for osteoporosis?

Although anyone may develop bone density problems, Caucasians and those Asians who don't consume a lot of soy are at increased risk, especially if they are slender. Smoking, excessive alcohol intake, a sedentary lifestyle and, of course genetics (family members with osteoporosis) are all risk factors.

Other significant risk factors are certain medications, the worst of which are steroids and some anti-convulsant medications. Individuals on long-term corticosteroid therapy for rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, or other pulmonary conditions should take some form of protection against osteoporosis.

Likewise, women who have (or had) an eating disorder or a very low basal metabolic index (BMI) and have missed periods, or women who have taken Lupron® or Provera® for over 6 months, are also at increased risk.

Diagnosis (or, who should have a bone density test?)

Anyone who is at risk should have a bone density determination. This may be a peripheral (heel) screen or central DEXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry). A calcaneus (heel) screen gives an idea as to whether you are "OK" or possibly low. If you are low, you will need a central hip/spine DEXA to determine your exact loss.

All women should have a peripheral screen at menopause, as should high risk individuals at a younger age. Women at significantly increased risk (2 or more risk factors) should probably have a DEXA, as should all women over 65. Every 2 years is an appropriate interval to follow the results of therapy (and for women over 65), although occasionally a greater or lesser interval is appropriate. New urine tests (Pyrilinks, CTX, NTX) are also helpful in ascertaining bone loss.

Remember what your mother said: "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

Comfortable Summer Hairstyles for Women

Summer is the perfect season to spend relaxing and having a good time as often as possible. It is a great way to relive some of life’s daily stresses by enjoying the weather whenever you can get away from work or household demands.

Do not waste hours of your summer days and night getting ready with hot curlers in your hair, or having to fuss with messy hairstyling solutions. Many women achieve flawless summer looks without having to work hard or miss out by taking to much time getting ready. By opting for comfortable summer hairstyles that not only look good, but give off the impression that you spent a lot of time getting ready, you will be happy to enjoy the summer with a fast and easy, style-and-go hair-do.

A hair-do that is gaining popularity this summer is the bob. Whether you are sporting a short or longer bob, this look is both comfortable and easy for women in the summer. Give yourself a break from hot curlers and curling irons this summer with this cute and sassy hairstyle. This hairstyle works beautifully with many different hair types and facial structures, and is also an appropriate hairstyle for women of all ages.

If you have medium length to long hair, you will be happy to know that the ponytail is still an extremely popular look for summer this year. Aside from a bob hairstyle, you cannot choose a much simpler way to style your hair than with a ponytail. With the wide assortment of colorful ponytail holders and hair tiebacks made out of different and unique materials, it is great to keep that fun, flirty look with your hair. Some hair bands can be covered with eye-catching gems that help you create several stunning looks without much effort at all.

Another trendy hairstyle for this summer is the fringe cut hairstyle. The fringe is an easy style-and-go choice that is popular with many women who want to let their personality run free. This somewhat feisty haircut is extremely easy to manage and maintain. Spend less time styling your hair and more time enjoying summer activities with this do.

Farrah Fawcett was one of the original women to make the layered and feathered back look famous. She single-handedly influenced millions of women in the 70’s to sport her unique hairstyle. This hairstyle remains a popular choice with many women to this day. The layered hair looks great any time of the year, but many women prefer this easy and care-free look during the summer months. This layered look is a simple way to achieve and maintain all summer long.

Another well-liked hairstyle among women during the summer is the crop. This is a great look for women who prefer not to spend much time on their hair at all. A broken-edged crop can make for a dramatic look for most women, and is fairly easy to handle. This is different from a straight-edged crop, as a broken-edged cut follows the contours of your hair, which naturally varies at different points. This creates texturing that is unique to your hair and lends a very lovely style to your locks.

Different haircuts are not the only hot trends for women in the summer of 2009. Many women are embracing color, as it has always been important in hairstyles choices. This summer, strawberry blonde, auburn, and rich chocolates tend to be the trend setting colors of the season.

If you want to know what summer hairstyles are hot with celebrities, look through celebrity and fashion magazines to find out who is wearing what trendy hairstyle this summer. There are also many magazines devoted to highlighting trendy hairstyles for women that can give you some great insights and tips on the summer hairstyle that is just right for you.

Consulting with your hairstylist is a great way to get more ideas on fashionable summer hairstyles. Tell your hairstylist that you want a style that looks great but that is easy to maintain, so that you can spend less time in front of the mirror and more time out enjoying yourself this summer. You can also look through a salon’s magazines on hairstyles to get ideas the next time you are in a hair salon.

Some of the summer hairstyle choices for women may be new to you, and you may be a little apprehensive about taking the plunge to re-inventing yourself. By summers end, your hair will have begun to grow out and you can go back to your old hairstyle if you wish. Be bold and take a risk on a cute and fun new hairstyle this summer.

Stop letting your hair hold you back from summertime fun because it refuses to be styled in a timely and simple manner. Liberate yourself from hot curlers, curling irons, straighteners, messy hairstyling products, and the fuss and muss of styling your hair this summer with an easy hairstyle. Choose a summer hairstyle that is easy to style and that will look great on the beach or out for a night on the town.

A Woman’s Guide to Digestive Health

The digestive system is one of the most important systems in a woman’s body. This is because the digestive system is the one system that processes the proper nutrients as well ensuring good health. The importance of the digestive system in a woman’s body is highlighted by the fact that over time, a woman’s body is subject to various changes. Bodily changes such as menstruation, pregnancy, and menopausal may require a woman to take certain amounts of nutrients, especially in the case of pregnancy. Needless to say, it will be through the digestive system that proper nutrients will enter the body through the foods a woman eats.

The Need for a Holistic Approach

A guide to digestive health for women must be a holistic approach because of the different maladies that could affect women as well as the different forms of treatment that could be on hand. The most common digestive ailments that women suffer from include diarrhea, constipation, gastrointestinal disorders, and fatigue. Although these can be easily dismissed as just one of the numerous simple disorders that women suffer from, their presence could indicate a deeper problem affecting women’s health. As such, proper digestive health is a must for women. In other cases, factors that can complicate simple digestive disorders are more prevalent in women, hence the need for a holistic approach in treating the problem.

In some cases, gastrointestinal disorders often get mixed up with a woman’s menstrual cycle. In this situation, treatment for the digestive problem is often delayed and in some cases dismissed altogether, resulting to the initial digestive problem becoming worse and difficult to treat. So what should be in a woman’s guide to digestive health?

Digestive Health and Nutrition for Women

To begin with, common digestive problems in a woman are the result of poor nutrition. Moreover, it may be that there is a nutritional imbalance in a woman, which means that a woman is taking too much of one nutrient while getting less for other vital nutrients. As such, the proper and balanced diet must be observed.

Another factor that can contribute to poor digestive health in women is poor nutritional absorption. Again, this is due to poor and inadequate intake of the proper nutrition. Because nutrients are very vital in a woman’s body, it is a prime consideration to make sure that the proper kind and amount of nutrients are eaten.

Another factor that can affect digestive health in women is the amount of food intake itself. Although this is a result of an improper diet, other factors such as depression could also be the culprit. When this happens, it is important to exercise to help burn body fats and to restore the woman’s body to health. Although medications are available to tone down body size, their efficiency is held back by the numerous side effects they cause.

Find Out The Best Eye Gel For Dark Circles?

When shopping for the best eye gels for dark circles, there will be ingredients you will need and ingredients that you do not. With all of the different selections of eye gels on the market, it can be confusing to know which ones are the best. However, to narrow your search down, you just need to keep a few things in mind. In the following article, we will discuss what you should be looking for when finding the best eye gel for dark circles.

What you do not need when looking for the best eye gel for dark circles are harsh chemical ingredients. Any eye gel that has fragrances, preservatives, allergens, dyes, alcohols or other chemicals should be avoided. Eye gels with these ingredients can only further damage the sensitive areas around your eyes. It is best to look at these eye gels as toxic because that is what they are. Now that you know what to avoid, you can educate yourself on what the best ingredients are for eye gels that battle dark circles around the eyes. The best ingredient you will want to look for that is not found in many eye gels at all is Haloxyl. In studies, this ingredient has been proven to reduce the appearance of dark circles around the eyes. In fact, it has proven to be one of the most effective ingredients, hands down, in fighting dark circles. Of course, this ingredient will still take some use to get rid of the dark circles, but they will be gone with time. As fore mentioned, there are very few eye gels that actually contain this ingredient, so this should help to narrow your search down quite a bit.

Haloxyl battles dark circles in different ways. This ingredient even works with the collagen in your skin to make it appear more healthy and smooth. The more you use an eye gel with this ingredient in it, the better results you will be getting. Over time, Haloxyl will diminish the appearance of dark circles and will replenish your natural skin tone and color. Once you have used an eye gel with this ingredient in it for so long, you will no longer look old and tired. Haloxyl is a wonderful ingredient that works to get to the root of your problems.

Skin Tightening Secrets For Beautiful Skin

What are the skin tightening secrets for beautiful skin? Many have yet to discover this amazing miracle cream that is changing skin care results for the better.

"Miraculous", "Amazing" are some of the comments on a new skin cream that really firms sagging skin.

Firming sagging skin has always been a cosmetic makers nightmare, until now. Read on, you'll love it.

Test results at clinics by many people verify that this new firming face cream is truly a skin care breakthrough. Personally, I can add to the positive testimony: "It truly works amazingly well".

Sagging Skin Solved

A firming face cream with the right ingredients will tighten sagging skin. Amino acids will help firm sagging skin. What is also needed is collagen, keratin and elastin. Let me explain.

New Skin Growth

Our body is constantly replacing cells that are damaged. Getting older seems to slow down this process. So how do we renew or speed up new skin cell production?

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid helps proteins and other important ingredients to stick together, somewhat like an adhesive or glue. Glucose and amino acids assist in this process. When hyaluronic acid is lacking, wrinkles appear.

Saggy Skin Solution

Hyaluronic acid, which is important to new skin development, often breaks down because of enzymatic response. This means sagging skin, puffy eyes, bags under eyes and wrinkles in general. The reason is that hyaluronic acid has lost power to do what it should be doing.

Another reason for lack of skin firmness comes from too much sun over a period of time. Vitamin D comes mainly from the sun so a sunscreen is not recommended. What is recommended is: Don't stay out in the sun too long and take a supplement like fish oil.

Skin Care Secret - Read Carefully

The reason is that a reaction of enzymes break down the hyaluronic acid. When hyaluronic acid levels go down, we get sagging skin. As if that is not enough necks sag, wrinkles deepen and dark cirlces appear under the eyes. A secret that firms sagging skin is to stop the enzymatic action that is causing the hyaluronic acid to break down.

Another reason for sagging skin is overexposure to the sun. Many use a sunscreen to prevent this. I don't recommend sunscreen because it will not repair the skin damage. What is needed for repair is to supplement the skin with the antioxidants normally found in skin cells. How is that done?

Another Skin Care Key - Miracle Cream

What firms sagging skin is by simply including in your skin care regimen anti-oxidants that have been correctly formulated. This means, as we mentioned, having amino acid protein complexes that will cause new skin cells and new protein skin fibers to form. What would do that?

Wakame kelp extract has demonstrated the ability to suppress the enzyme culprit that causes a 50. This usually is done in as little as three weeks. Which means you should start to get back some elasticity back that was seemingly lost. This miracle cream has no artificial preservatives, fragrances, dyes, parabens, etc. It is all natural with no phoney ingredients.

All of this makes it very safe to use on your skin and very, very effective. And now, see my website listed below for more information on firming sagging skin and the new miracle cream.

Buying Clothes For Your Body Type

Have you ever been to your favorite store looking for this awesome outfit you saw your friend wear only to find it doesn't look right on you? I think we've all been there. The only thing is, sometimes we just chalk it up to the fact that we are thinner, larger, shorter, or taller than the friend we saw wearing the same outfit. We even go so far as to accept the fact that we will never be as good looking as they are and buy the outfit anyway! This needs to stop. Why torture ourselves? We are all wonderfully and beautifully made, even if we do have a few less or extra curves than our friends. And there are clothes that will look right on us, we just have to know how to shop for our body style and what will be the most flattering to our bodies. After all, that awesome outfit looked so awesome on your best pal because it was right for her body type, not because she is better looking than you are.

The first thing we all need to do is stop wishing we looked like Angelina Jolie. Famous actresses are beautiful, but they have rigorous exercise schedules and strict diet plans that the normal everyday house wife would find difficult to keep up with. Instead of being jealous, why don't we just love them for who they are and love ourselves for who we are? Plus, we have to remember that they have clauses in their contracts that allows them to only be shot from the angles that make them look the best. The most attractive quality about you to your spouse or significant other will be your confidence. So shop for flattering clothes for your body type, and go forth in confidence knowing you look good

Now that we have that out of the way, we should take a good look in the mirror and discover what shape we are. You can find information on body shapes easily on the internet and discover which one you are. You could be an apple, hour glass, skittle, vase, cornet, lollipop, column, bell, goblet, cello, pear, or brick. That sounds like a lot of shapes doesn't it? It is! It just reiterates how different we all can be. Let's examine each shape a little more closely and discuss what types of clothing works well with each.

The apple shape is pretty much round. Women tend to want to cover every inch of their bodies when they are apples. There is no need to! You can be the best you by looking for skirts that fasten on the side and flat at the front, small shaped wedge shoes, and tailored, wide leg jeans and trousers. Fitted jackets and lower (but not too low) necklines can also help you redefine your look.

The hour glass figure can be a challenge to dress as well. Since you are smaller in the middle, you should wear fitted clothes that clasp your curves and stretch your torso. Pencil skirts will be just your style, but avoid super high heeled shoes. You should try shoes with rounded toes and peep toes.

If you're a skittle, don't confuse it with the candy. That has nothing to do with it. Traditionally you would be slimmer at the top but then widen at the bottom. Different from the pear, your issues hit at the thighs, not at the bottom. You should choose vertical patterns on your bottom half to help slim the appearance of your thighs. Choose coats and shirts with broad lapels. For shoes, high chunky heels will work great for you.

A vase is similar to an hourglass but stretched out a bit more. You often feel you have an over sized chest and are uncomfortable in your own skin. Choose wide scooped necklines for this shape. A single button jacket will accent your shape well. You can choose curvy shoes because you are curvy!

A cornet is like the shape of an ice cream cone. You want to choose draping dresses, skinny jeans, and delicate heels. They will accent your awesome calves and ankles.

The lollipop doesn't need any explanation, just imagine a lollipop! Evening gowns will be easy for you to buy, but everyday clothes may be a challenge. Choose dresses with strategic gathers to direct eye to your waist. Bell bottom pants will make you look less top heavy. For shoes, choose slim heels to accent your slim legs.

Being shaped like a column isn't too difficult to figure out. Curves are scarce in your case. Get shirts with gathering and pleating. Shoes should be balanced and supportive. Fabrics like chiffon will soften your shape as well.

Bell shapes need to create broader shoulders with a funnel shaped coat. In summer, you want to choose thigh skimming kaftans. Cone heels will be great for your look.

If you look at your shape and think of a crystal goblet, you may be a goblet shape. You should wear deep wide v necks, skirts that are fitted at the top, and nice heels to compliment your shapely legs.

If you have broad shoulders, a large chest, and a nice proportioned back end, you may be a cello. Wide v necks will do great for you, as well as skirts with sewn down paneling. Shoes should support your upper leg while making the most of your elegant ankles.

The pear shape widens at the buttocks and continues on down. You should avoid side pockets and go for flat front trousers. Straight boots will make your legs look great, and belting your coat or blouse will bring attention to your waist.

If you feel you look more masculine than feminine, you may be a brick shape. If you are a brick shape, don't worry. You too can look fabulous! Look for sequined bands on the tops of bloses and shirts. Choose skirts with asymmetric pleats to lift and caress your buttocks. Rounded toe shoes will look the best for you.

No matter what shape you are, you can look great. Just look for the right clothes for you, and never settle for clothes you feel frumpy or unattractive in.

Women's Need for Beauty

Have you ever gazed at a painting by Monet and felt as if you had been instantly transported to a lovely garden in Giverny, France? Have you ever walked into a flower shop and felt wonderfully overcome by the blended fragrances of sterling roses, stargazer lilies, and English lavender? Or have you perhaps recently redecorated your master bedroom in your favorite colors and have now created your perfect sanctuary?
As women, we tend to be the caretakers of everyone around us, leaving little, if any, time for ourselves. For that reason, it’s important that we circumvent the outer chaos of our hectic lives by surrounding ourselves with things that evoke calm and tranquility, if only for moments at a time. And those “things” can be as different and unique as each woman is different and unique. We’ve all heard the old saying “Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.” And so it is with this concept of surrounding ourselves with beauty. It’s whatever elicits and captures this visceral response for you. And if you’ve been tightening your purse strings of late, try any of these budget-friendly, simple, but effective, “beauty” tips:
1. Buy fresh flowers from your local Farmers Market, where they‘re generally less expensive than the flower shop or even the grocery store. Or if an entire bouquet is beyond your current budget, one single rose stem will do the trick. Place them on your nightstand so that these fragrant blooms are the first thing you see when you wake up in the morning and the last thing you see when you retire in the evening.
2. Instead of listening to the news, play a feel-good CD as you’re getting yourself ready in the morning. This may be your favorite music artist or perhaps a personal-growth audio. The key is that it moves you in some positive, uplifting way.
3. Commune with nature by taking a walk through a local park, or stop by one on your way home. Enjoy the simplicity of nature and all of her inherently calming ways. Let Mother Earth nurture you.
4. De-clutter and organize your office space or work area. You’ll discover this will do wonders for reducing stress levels (not to mention create a more efficient environment).
5. Take a luxurious candlelit bubble bath before bed. Be sure to play soothing music. Then close your eyes and picture your body soaking away all of the day’s anxiety and worries.
6. Reach out and offer to help someone in need. Run an errand for a neighbor who has been under the weather lately. Call a loved one who has been facing challenges and offer your support or simply a listening ear. Visit your local library and offer to be a volunteer reader.
7. Give yourself permission to indulge in a favorite treat on occasion, and do it without guilt. That tiramisu may be just what your soul has been craving.
So, whether your “beauty” is visual, auditory, sensory, or tactile, begin surrounding yourself daily with whatever that is for you. Be good to yourself. You’ll soon begin to see your days magically transform into more positive and enjoyable experiences. After all, that’s the “beauty” of it.

Body Shape Fashion Tips

Every woman wants to feel and look great. Some women want to look good for their husbands or boyfriends, some for strangers they don't even know and some want it for themselves. The reasons might be different but they can't achieve it without some right body shape fashion tips.
I think I can speak for most women and say that one of the most difficult things in our lives is to accept our bodies the way they are, especially when they are not perfect. And usually they're not. But when you can achieve that and find inner peace between you and your body, you'll stop stressing out about your size and start to concentrate on more important things in your life.
The first step to achieve that is to find out what body shape you are and then use mine great body shape fashion tips to disguise your flaws and show the best assets of your body.
There are four common body shapes – pear, apple, hourglass and rectangle. Probably the most common type is pear. Pears have their upper body smaller than lower and when they gain weight it usually goes to their hips and thighs. Because the lower body is larger than the upper one, it's important for pears to find a balance between the two. So if your body shape is pear you should wear fitted tops in bright and light colours with different prints and to make your hips and legs look slimmer you should wear A – line or flared skirts. If you prefer jeans you should wear wide – leg or straight legged jeans in darker colours. Another great fashion tip from mine body shape fashion tips is that if you want to bring attention to your neck and face rather then to your hips, you should wear necklaces and earrings.
Apples have their upper body larger than lower and if they gain weight it usually goes to their waistline. So it's important to draw attention from your waist to your legs. So wear jeans that have a flat front and have back pockets that can give a little bit of curve to your flatter rear. You should stay away from jeans that are too tight as they will make you look even bigger on the top. If you prefer skirts, wear A – line skirts or short skirts that are 1 to 5 inches above the knee. The tops you shouldn't wear with those jeans and skirts are dark tops with too many patterns. And because apples have larger breast don't forget that very important is the right bra.
If you're lucky enough to have an hourglass figure, you've found a balance that most of us, especially pears, are looking for. Because your shoulders and curvy hips are equal in size, you don't have to be afraid of patterns and you should go for tops with V – neck and wear some stretch denim jeans with larger hips and smaller waist. As for skirts you should wear ¾ length or full length skirts. Probably the most valuable of all body shape fashion tips for women with an hourglass figure is – don't hide your body by wearing some baggy clothes.
If you have a rectangle figure you definitely have great legs and you should show them by wearing jeans with a low – rise and with back pockets that will make your bottom look fuller. Or you can wear pencil, A – lined or flared skirts. Because your figure is straight up and down you shouldn't wear vertical patterns as they will make you look even thinner, but rather wear scoop neck or V – neck tops that will make you look curvier.
We are all different in the way we look but we have one thing in common, we always find something we don't like about our bodies. So make the first step to change and find out what your body shape is and use mine body shape fashion tips as they can help you to take the focus of your problem areas and emphasize what is positive on your body. They can even save your time when shopping, as quite often we buy clothes that are unflattering for our figure because they don't have the right cut, colour or print.
And there's another aspect where mine body shape fashion tips can be very useful. They can help you to become more confident, because the way you feel determines the way you look. So feel confident and it definitely will show.
